3 Reasons to Take Summer Courses in College

"Summer school" sounds like a paradox: why would anyone want to do school during summer vacation? Summer is supposed to be a time to relax and unwind from the previous school year, right?!

Although going on a three-month tropical vacation sounds like a dream, it is very beneficial to do summer classes when you are in college.

Here are 3 reasons why you should take summer classes in college:

 1.  You can graduate sooner

Taking more classes during the summer means that you do not take as many classes during the fall and spring. Therefore, if you take enough summer classes, you may be eligible to finish college a semester or two early! What are the perks of finishing school early? Finishing school early means 1) less room and board payments; 2) starting your career faster; and 3) showing your future employer that you went above and beyond expectations.

2. You can have less stress during regular school year

A benefit to taking classes is that you can have a lighter course-load during the regular school year. Instead of taking five classes, you can take three or four. This allows you more time for extra-curricular activities, working, and/or spending time with friends.

3. You can build relationships with faculty/staff

When you are one of the students in a very small summer school program, you have the opportunity to get to know the faculty and staff better. Having a connection with these professors and administrators can be beneficial because they can become your mentors and future job references.

I highly recommend taking summer courses if possible, but it is not for everyone! There are many reasons that students would not do summer school, and that is completely fine! However, if you have the opportunity to take a summer class, I recommend it! I know that you are going to do great things!
