How to Stay Organized as a Student

Each person needs to create their own organization plan... some people even need to plan on how they are going to plan... if that makes sense.

You need to do what works for you. The following points are things I have done in order to stay organized. I hope that this list is helpful even if you decide not to do all of them.

7 Ways to Stay Organized as a Student:
  • Get school supplies
    • In order to be organized, you need the proper materials. Life becomes much easier (and hopefully less stressful) when you have these materials.
      • Folders- organize all your papers into different folders so that you don’t have to scramble to find the right paper.
      • Sticky notes- write reminders to yourself or save a spot in your textbook!
      • Highlighters- use these when taking notes or when writing on textbooks
      • Pens & pencils- find the right writing utensils for you! Writing a paper or notes can be more enjoyable when you have the right pens and pencils.
      • Binder- get a binder that can hold all of your class information. Having pocket-dividers can also be a nice bonus!
      • Loose-leaf paper- need I say more?
      • Notebooks- you’ll likely want to have different notebooks so you can take notes for each class.
  • Use a calendar to stay more organized
    • If I didn’t have my planner I would be so lost. In order to stay organized and remember all of your obligations, you need a planner/calendar!
  • Create a study space
    • Whether it’s a desk in your dorm or the kitchen table in your apartment... you need a neat and organized space to do your work.
  • Prepare the night before
    • This can do wonders! It only takes an extra 5 to 10 minutes to set out your clothes and organize your bag/backpack. It is so much easier to do this when you are still awake, rather than barely awake in the morning (if you're anything like me).
  • Make to-do lists
    • What are your priorities? What are things that can wait? Make a list for each and then cross them off when you are finished. The simple action of making a to-do list can also help you feel more accomplished.
  • Organize your computer/electronic files
    • To be honest, I would like to be better at this! When your homework, research, work info, and personal life files are organized on your computer, it is easier to find the files!
  • Set reminders/ alarms
    • If you find yourself consistently forgetting about a meeting/class/homework assignment, set alarms and reminders on your phone so that you don't forget!
I hope that you find these tips helpful! I know that you are going to do great things!
